Alarms & upgrades

Thatcham guide

Thatcham: has divided car alarms into 2 separate categories:

  • Category 1 - Combined alarm and immobiliser
  • Category 2-1 - Alarm upgrades
  • Category 1 - Combined alarm and immobiliser

    These have the following features:

    Alarm:

  • Will go off if a thief enters the vehicle or opens a doors/boot/bonnet
  • Switched on automatically when you leave the car (or you don't have to actively turn it on)
  • Has its own battery for the siren and will sounds even if the main battery is disconnected

  • Immobiliser:

  • Operates separately to the main system in your car (acts as a backup)
  • Has a defence against easily copying the code that allows you to start your car
  • Category 2-1 - Alarm upgrades

These have the same features as above, except:

  • An alarm is added to an existing Category 2 immobiliser on its own to make it a Category 1 system (a bit counter intuitive, but Category 1 is higher than 2)
  • If you only had an immobiliser fitted on your car on its own, and added a Thatcham approved alarm to it - the combined system would be Category 1
