Steering wheel locks

Steering wheel locks or 'Mechanical immobilisers' as Thatcham calls them, are Thatcham Category 3 products. They do what they say on the tin - they lock your steering wheel. They are made with very strong materials that can't be easily cut or broken and once applied to your steering wheel they make it virtually impossible to drive a car.

In addition, they are typically brightly coloured to make them easily seen from outside the car, so act as an effective theft deterrent as well.

The only drawback is that you have to remember to apply the device each time you leave the car, and for quick stops most people won't do this, and a thief only needs seconds to steal it!

Check out the steering wheel locks buyer's guide to see what to look for.

Immobiliser

An immobiliser stops the vehicle from being driven away. There are two types:

1. Mechanical: These lock either the steering wheel, gear lever or pedals in position.

2. Electronic: These disable the vehicle's electrical system and engine. This sets off the alarm if a thief breaks a car window.

Passive arming

The alarm/immobiliser is switched on automatically when you leave the car.
