Steering wheel locks

Buyer's guide

The only Thatcham approved mechanical immobilisers are steering wheel locks. These are secure devices that you place on your steering wheel, whenever the car is parked that makes it difficult to drive the car. Other types include gear locks which are a strong piece of metal that fit to the gear lever and handbrake, thereby, stopping them from moving.

The only drawback with these is that you must physically put them on or activate them, for it to work each time you park the car.

When looking to buy a steering wheel lock, you should look for one that is:

1. Easy to put on to lock, and take off once unlocked (ie. steering wheel lock attached to the steering wheel with 2 clips)

2. Able to be locked to one thing in the car, that makes it impossible or very hard to drive (locks the steering wheel for example)

See our Thatcham approved steering wheel lock supplier list for approved systems.
